I know, I know. I promised to post something soon last month but my weaker self got the better off me.
Anyway, this one is about the new Star Trek movie. Don't worry, I'll try to keep it as spoiler-free as possible. Will cover X-Men Origins: Wolverine (watched that one on Saturday) in another newspost.
First off I would like to thank the folks at the Cinemaxx for their online services. Order your ticket online and get it at a ticket automat in the lobby by inserting your cash card. Effort is something like a minute. No more will I have to wait 20 minutes untill all them folks before me snatched away all the good seats. It kinda baffles me that there are still so many people getting in line to buy a ticket at the counter.
Anyway, about the movie. I loved it to bits despite al the criticism I hear from all those other trekkies. Sure there was a lot of action going on it it wasn't anything like that fail they called Nemesis. I must say that I can't come up with much criticism for this movie.
Many said that young Kirk was too much of a good for nothing womaniser. While I can agree that the way he got into Star Fleet Academy was quite unrealistic I can't agree with the criticism about his personality. They overdid it a few times like for example in the Kobayashi Maru test but that's about it.
McCoy was exactly what you would expect him to be. The constantly complaining and overly cynical doctor we all love so much.
Uhura was hot. I mean like furnace-hot. Very self confident, not very fond of Kirk and she knows how to get what he wants. Liked her relationship with young Spock.
Sulu: Ass kickin space Samurai
Chekov was kinda reduced to give some comical relief which mainly revolved around his accent.
Young Scotty was quite cranky and a lot more cynical than his older counterpart and his little 'sidekick' managed to score some laughs.
Zachary Quinto's performance as young Spock was probably the best in the whole movie. At no point was he out of character nor were is actions incomprehensible. They did a good job not trying to justify his relationship with Uhura. I mean there really is no need to, if you ask me. Stuff like that just happens, no need to justify at all.
Old Spock was played by the man himself, Leonard Nimoy. Nothing went wrong there. All there is to say for me is that I miss his old German voice, Herbert Weicker who died back in 1997. Of course there is nothing you can do about it but something was amiss.
Let's cover the few points of criticism I have:
- The enemy vessel kinda looks like something the Borg would come up with if they were all drunk (but it does a good job at giving the viewer an eerie feeling)
- They overdid it with the number of guns on the star fleet vessels... OH FUCK IT IT LOOKS AWESOME!!!!!!
- The interior of the Star Fleet ships looked more like a industrial complex sometimes
- ...
Wow, that's everything I can come up with.
Some may say that the whole time travel thingy was just a weak excuse to alter the Star Trek time line in order to be able to make a movie with more action than typical for most Star Trek movies but I think it was pulled off extremely well. Plus they were able to give us Leonard Nimoy that way, so why on earth are they complaining about that?
The ships interior and exterior design are amazing.
Last but not least: The Soundtrack.
I loved it and so will you. It still gives me the shivers and that's always a good thing. It is extremely epic and fits the movie like a glove. Michael Giacchino did a perfect job on this one. Space Opera feeling at it's very best.
In a nutshell:
Star Trek has been successfully reborn. Everything we loved is there, the humor, the characters, the drama... OK, I actually miss the technobabble but only a little

Successfully serving both the fans and folks who are new to Star Trek it has that 'new car smell' feeling to it.
Watch it, you will love it (and that's coming from a Trekkie)!
Cheerio...
